Does not support stretch-activated channels mediating triggered contractions in rat trabeculae; leaves open their role in human arrhythmias.
Gadolinium-sensitive stretch-activated channels do not appear to be necessary for the triggering or propagation of local contractions in rat cardiac trabeculae.
Zhang et al. (1996) studied this question. Gadolinium (Gd3+) vs. Decreasing [Ca2+]o was evaluated on Twitch force, triggering rate, and propagation velocity of TPCs. Gadolinium decreased twitch force, triggering rate, and propagation velocity of triggered propagated contractions in rat cardiac trabeculae, but this effect was not significantly larger than that caused by decreasing extracellular calcium.
