No sex-specific MLSS adjustment needed in adolescents; extends adult data but leaves open prospective validation for youth training.
Cross-Sectional (n=25)
In adolescent runners, the maximal lactate steady state occurs at a similar relative exercise intensity as in adults and can be approximated by a fixed blood lactate concentration of 2.5 mmol/l.
Almarwaey et al. (2004) conducted a cross-sectional in adolescent endurance-trained runners (n=25). Treadmill running vs. Between sexes and fixed blood lactate concentrations was evaluated on Exercise intensity corresponding to maximal lactate steady state. Maximal lactate steady state assessment in adolescent runners showed no sex differences in relative exercise intensity (85% peak VO2) and was approximated by a fixed blood lactate of 2.5 mmol/L.
