May relieve rest pain and heal ulcers in severe PAD but risks cerebrovascular events; leaves open need for randomized trials with screening.
Does intravenous Prostaglandin E1 improve rest pain and ulcer healing in patients with complications of peripheral obstructive arterial disease?
Intravenous PGE1 may provide symptomatic relief and ulcer healing in peripheral obstructive arterial disease, but carries a risk of cerebrovascular events requiring prior evaluation.
Killion et al. (1987) studied complications of peripheral obstructive arterial disease (n=41). Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) was evaluated on Symptomatic relief of rest pain and spontaneous healing of stable ulcers. Continuous intravenous infusion of Prostaglandin E1 provided symptomatic relief of rest pain and healing of stable ulcers in 41 patients, but was associated with TIA and CVA.
