Key result
Enalapril increases capillary blood cell velocity after finger cooling while mibefradil shows no effect.
Why the study?
The effects of enalapril and mibefradil on capillary blood cell velocity in finger nailfold capillaries of patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were not well characterized.

Enalapril improves microvascular flow response to cold stress in hypertension unlike mibefradil; extends class-specific effects to capillary reactivity in RCTs.

Does enalapril compared to mibefradil improve capillary blood cell velocity in outpatients with mild to moderate essential hypertension?
Absolute Event Rate: 0.4% vs 0.31%
p-value: p=0.005
Enalapril, but not mibefradil, improves microvascular flow response to cold stress in patients with essential hypertension.
Martina et al. (1999) conducted an RCT in Mild to moderate essential hypertension (n=43). Enalapril vs. Mibefradil was evaluated on Capillary blood cell velocity immediately after local finger cooling (p=0.005). Enalapril significantly increased capillary blood cell velocity after local finger cooling compared to baseline (P=0.005), whereas mibefradil produced no significant change.
