IV L-NAME decreases resting retinal blood flow ~27% in cats without affecting autoregulation.
Why the study?
Does NO synthase inhibition with L-NAME alter retinal blood flow and autoregulation in anesthetized cats?
Does NO synthase inhibition with L-NAME alter retinal blood flow and autoregulation in anesthetized cats?
Nitric oxide appears to mediate resting retinal blood flow but not the autoregulatory response to decreased perfusion pressure in cats.

L-NAME reduces resting retinal blood flow in cats without altering autoregulation; hypothesis-generating for nitric oxide's role in humans.
Harino et al. (1999) studied Retinal blood flow regulation (n=7). NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) vs. Baseline / absence of L-NAME was evaluated on Retinal blood flow under resting conditions. Intravenous administration of L-NAME (30 mg/kg) in anesthetized cats significantly decreased retinal blood flow by 27+/-6% under resting conditions, but did not affect autoregulation.
