Key result
Increasing cytosolic calcium correlates with higher O2 uptake in rat myocytes, driven by ADP generation.
Why the study?
The relationship between cytosolic free calcium concentration and oxygen uptake rates in isolated cardiac myocytes was not fully characterized, including the mechanisms involved.
Population
Isolated rat cardiac myocytes
Comparison
Depolarization with K+ or veratridine to increase cytosolic free Ca2+ versus baseline and varying extracellular conditions
Design
Preclinical experimental study

Supports calcium-ADP coupling to myocyte respiration; leaves open translation to intact heart or human disease.
In isolated rat cardiac myocytes, increased cytosolic free calcium correlates with stimulated oxygen uptake, primarily driven by ADP generation rather than direct mitochondrial dehydrogenase activation.
Moreno‐Sánchez et al. (1988) studied this question. Depolarization with K+ or veratridine was evaluated on Rates of O2 uptake as a function of cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration. In isolated rat cardiac myocytes, increasing cytosolic free calcium via depolarization with K+ or veratridine correlated with stimulation of O2 uptake, predominantly driven by ADP generation.
