Key result
IV nicardipine reduces mean aortic pressure to 78 mm Hg in coronary disease patients.
Why the study?
The hemodynamic effects of nicardipine on left ventricular function and compliance in patients with coronary heart disease were not fully characterized.
Does intravenous nicardipine improve left ventricular hemodynamics in patients with coronary heart disease?
Population
15 patients with angiography-confirmed coronary heart disease including normotensive and hypertensive individuals
Comparison
Intravenous nicardipine administration vs baseline hemodynamics
Design
Case series study

Acute aortic pressure reduction seen with nicardipine in coronary disease; leaves open outcome benefits pending randomized trials.
Does intravenous nicardipine improve left ventricular hemodynamics in patients with coronary heart disease?
Intravenous nicardipine provides potent vasodilator effects and improves left ventricular hemodynamics in both normotensive and hypertensive patients with coronary heart disease.
Engberding et al. (1990) studied Coronary heart disease (n=15). Nicardipine vs. Baseline (before administration) was evaluated on Hemodynamic parameters including aortic pressure and systemic vascular resistance. Intravenous nicardipine significantly reduced mean aortic pressure from baseline in normotensive (97 to 78 mm Hg, P<0.001) and hypertensive patients (110 to 78 mm Hg, P<0.001) with coronary disease.
