Key result
Anti-beta 2-GPI and aCL represent distinct autoantibody populations, with only ~23% concordance in positive sera.
Why the study?
It was unclear whether anticardiolipin and anti-beta 2-GPI antibodies represent two distinct populations and whether the beta 2-GPI phospholipid-binding site is crucial for anti-beta 2-GPI reactivity.
Population
62 anticardiolipin ELISA positive sera
Comparison
Anticardiolipin antibodies vs anti-beta 2-GPI antibodies
Design
Observational study

Distinguishing aCL from anti-β2-GPI may refine APS serology; leaves open whether dual testing improves thrombotic risk stratification.
Observational (n=62)
Sorice et al. (1996) conducted an observational in Anticardiolipin (aCL) ELISA positive sera (n=62). Autoantibody profiling was evaluated on Positivity for anti-beta 2-GPI and aCL. Analysis of 62 anticardiolipin ELISA positive sera showed that 22.6% were positive for anti-beta 2-GPI and 67.7% for aCL, demonstrating they are distinct autoantibody populations.
