Key result
Maze IIIB plus mitral annuloplasty is linked to ~93% early sinus rhythm retention.
Why the study?
The immediate hospital period outcomes of the Maze IIb surgery for atrial fibrillation complicated by arrhythmogenic mitral regurgitation were not well characterized.
Cohort (n=310)
No
Absolute Event Rate: 93% vs 84%
p-value: p=<0.001
May support combined Maze IIIB with valve surgery for early sinus rhythm; hypothesis-generating and requires randomized confirmation.

Bockeria et al. (2020) conducted a cohort in Atrial fibrillation complicated by arrhythmogenic mitral regurgitation (n=310). Maze IIIB surgery with mitral and tricuspid valve annuloplasty vs. Maze IIIB surgery with or without tricuspid valve annuloplasty (no mitral valve annuloplasty) was evaluated on Sinus rhythm retention in the early postoperative period (p=<0.001). Maze IIIB surgery combined with mitral and tricuspid valve annuloplasty significantly improved sinus rhythm retention to 93% compared to 84% in patients without mitral valve correction during the early postoperative period.
