Key result
Acute unstable CAD is linked to transiently reduced platelet sensitivity to prostacyclin.
Why the study?
Unstable coronary artery disease may be related to coronary blood flow obstructions by platelet aggregates, but platelet reactivity characteristics in this condition are not fully understood.
Comparison
Patients with unstable CAD vs patients without signs of ischemia
Design
Observational study measuring platelet function and plasma markers
Follow-up
12 months

Transient prostacyclin resistance may heighten acute thrombotic risk in unstable CAD; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation.
Observational (n=164)
Swahn et al. (1987) conducted an observational in Suspected unstable coronary artery disease (CAD) (n=164). Unstable CAD (presence of nontransmural myocardial infarction or ischemia) vs. Patients without signs of ischemia was evaluated on Platelet sensitivity to prostacyclin (PSP) and aggregability towards ADP. Patients with unstable CAD had reduced platelet sensitivity to the inhibitory effects of prostacyclin in the acute phase compared to controls, with no differences observed after 12 months.
