The study aims to compare the effectiveness of Carbicarb and sodium bicarbonate against saline in treating hypoxic lactic acidosis in newborn pigs.
Induced hypoxia through ventilation with 8% oxygen in 30 piglets.
Reversed hypoxia by placing animals in 21% or 100% oxygen while administering saline, Carbicarb, or sodium bicarbonate.
Measured data for 120 minutes post-therapy.
Both Carbicarb and sodium bicarbonate significantly increased arterial carbon dioxide tension (pCO2).
In moderate acidosis, initial improvement in arterial pH was seen with alkalinizing agents compared to saline, but became statistically insignificant thereafter.
No differences in hemodynamic variables and plasma lactic acid concentration were observed between groups.
