Overview

These cross-sectional associations in T2D should not change practice; hypothesis-generating for distinct Ang-2/sTie-2 roles in oxidative stress and insulin resistance.

Structured PICO

P
Population
80 subjects with established type 2 diabetes mellitus, age 65 ± 7 years, 47.7% female, recruited at the Outpatient Clinic of Diabetes, Medical University of Vienna, Austria. Key inclusion: age 40-80 years, under oral anti-diabetic and/or insulin therapy, intact hepatic and renal function.
O
Outcome
Associations of circulating Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) and soluble Tie-2 (sTie-2) with cardiometabolic parameters and diabetic complicationssurrogate

In subjects with type 2 diabetes, circulating Ang-2 is independently associated with GGT (a marker of oxidative stress) and macrovascular disease, whereas sTie-2 is independently associated with long-term metabolic control parameters like HbA1c and insulin resistance.

Limitations

  • Cross-sectional design makes causal relationship unclear
  • Included only elderly diabetic men and post-menopausal women
