Single-plane cineangiocardiography using the area-length method with a regression correction provides quantifiable measurements of left ventricular volumes and hemodynamics in a normal canine model.
Establishes normative canine LV volumes and EF; leaves open translation to diseased models or other species.
SUMMARY Left ventricular volumes of 10 normal dogs under light inhalation anesthesia were calculated from single-plane cineangiocardiograms by the area-length method, using the formula V = (π/6)(LD2), after correcting the calculated volumes with a regression equation comparing the calculated volumes with known volumes of barium sulfate paste injected into excised canine hearts. The regression equation thus derived, Vtrue = 0.944 Vcalculated - 5.244 ml., was incorporated in the final equation. Distortion and magnification were corrected, using a grid regulated in 0.5-inch squares. Pressure-volume loops were plotted for each heart cycle. The end systolic volume (esv) was 12.5 ± 1.2 mL/10 kg., the end diastolic volume (edv) was 25.4 ± 2.2 ml./ 10 kg., the stroke volume (sv) was 15.0 ± 1.4 ml./lO kg., and the ejection fraction (ef) was 0.61 ± 0.02. Net stroke work was 1,780 ± 190 Gm.-cm., and the diastolic stroke work was 126 ± 35 Gm.-cm.
