TAV provides more accurate blood flow volume measurements than TAMV in a simulated circuit.
Why the study?
When measuring brachial artery blood flow, values can vary depending on measurement site if vessels are tortuous, prompting validation of ultrasound flow accuracy and appropriate measurement sites.
Does flow volume measurement using time-averaged velocity (TAV) improve accuracy compared to time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMV) in a simulated circuit?
Does flow volume measurement using time-averaged velocity (TAV) improve accuracy compared to time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMV) in a simulated circuit?
In ultrasound pulse Doppler flow measurement, using time-averaged velocity (TAV) is more accurate than time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMV), and measurements should be taken away from tortuous sections.
TAV may improve Doppler flow accuracy in simulations; leaves open clinical translation and requires in vivo validation before practice change.

Yamamoto et al. (2023) studied Vascular access flow volume measurement. Time-averaged flow velocity (TAV) vs. Time-averaged maximum flow velocity (TAMV) was evaluated on Accuracy of flow volume measurement compared to specified flow rates. Time-averaged flow velocity (TAV) was more accurate than time-averaged maximum flow velocity (TAMV) for blood flow volume measurement in a simulated circuit.
