Increased potassium triggers paradoxical contraction in precontracted vascular smooth muscle via sodium pump inhibition.
Why the study?
The role of a circulating endogenous digitalis-like factor in sodium-sensitive hypertension and its vascular effects influenced by potassium remain controversial.
The vascular smooth muscle contractile response induced by the agent isolated from peritoneal dialysate reflects sodium pump inhibition, supporting its role as a circulating regulator of the sodium pump.

In vitro DLF responses match sodium pump inhibitors; leaves open its role in sodium-sensitive hypertension.
Piotr Soszyński (1997) studied sodium-sensitive hypertension. Endogenous digitalis-like factor (DLF) isolated from peritoneal dialysate vs. Ouabain, bufalin, and serotonin was evaluated on Vascular smooth muscle contractile response to increased potassium concentration. An increase in potassium concentration induced a secondary paradoxical contractile response in vascular smooth muscle precontracted with endogenous DLF, ouabain, or bufalin, reflecting sodium pump inhibition.
