Key result
Prior epIPV linked to ~78% higher rate of fourfold antibody rise vs OPV after challenge.
Why the study?
The humoral immune response to type 1 oral poliovirus vaccine in children previously immunized with enhanced potency inactivated poliovirus vaccine or live oral poliovirus vaccine was not well characterized.
Does a single dose of monovalent type 1 oral poliovirus vaccine improve antibody response more in children previously immunized with epIPV compared to those previously immunized with OPV?
Comparison
Single dose OPV1 challenge in children previously immunized with epIPV vs OPV

OPV1 challenge was associated with higher seroresponse in epIPV- versus OPV-primed children; hypothesis-generating for polio strategies, should not yet change practice.
Cohort (n=117)
Does a single dose of monovalent type 1 oral poliovirus vaccine improve antibody response more in children previously immunized with epIPV compared to those previously immunized with OPV?
Absolute Event Rate: 50.9% vs 28.6%
p-value: p=statistically significant
Administration of OPV1 effectively raises serum antibody levels in children previously immunized with epIPV, with a superior booster response compared to those previously immunized with OPV.
John F. Modlin (1990) conducted a cohort in Poliovirus immunization (n=117). Previous immunization with enhanced potency inactivated poliovirus vaccine (epIPV) vs. Previous immunization with oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) was evaluated on Fourfold or greater rise in poliovirus type 1 antibody after OPV1 challenge (p=statistically significant). Following an OPV1 challenge, a fourfold or greater rise in poliovirus type 1 antibody occurred in 50.9% of children previously immunized with epIPV compared to 28.6% of those who received OPV.
