β1-AR Ser49Gly polymorphism links to higher plasma renin activity in hypertensive 49SS homozygotes.
Why the study?
The relationship between beta-adrenergic receptor-blocking drugs, plasma renin activity, and blood pressure remains unclear, including the role of genetic polymorphisms in β1-AR.

β1-AR Ser49Gly variants may refine renin profiling in hypertension; extends RCT evidence linking genotype to renin-angiotensin activity.
Morgan et al. (1974) conducted a cross-sectional in Mild hypertension (n=467). β1-AR Ser49Gly polymorphism (49SS genotype) vs. Gly49 allele carriers (49SG+49GG genotypes) was evaluated on Log-transformed plasma renin activity (p=0.01). The β1-AR Ser49Gly polymorphism was independently associated with elevated plasma renin activity in hypertensive patients, with significantly higher levels in 49SS homozygotes compared to Gly49 carriers (p=0.01).
