When does an economic position become a place others cannot get around? And when they cannot get around it, do the people there still have a real way? This paper asks these two things at the level of relations. The first six sections are set in Springhollow: a water company with only fourteen employees is the sole supplier of piped water to two villages, and after raising its price by sixty percent it issues one and the same cut-off notice to both villages; Lower Hollow, by a vote of its village assembly years earlier, ceded the plots of its old wells, and the company filled the old wells in; Upper Hollow had no agreement, and its old wells dried up one after another, the cause not determined. The last three sections are set in Bluekiln: a porcelain works that employs seventy percent of the town's working population, whose employment contract has articles on dormitories, scrip, wage advances and non-competition; what a veteran kiln worker who wanted to leave actually ran into was that, while his advance was unpaid, the company did not consent to his leaving, and once he had repaid it he was blocked by the non-compete article, which was later undone by a sum someone put up. The paper sets out nine propositions. A chokepoint is a position others cannot get around on the way to sustaining their lives or unfolding their own paths; it has two magnitudes, breadth and depth, and small power can run deep. Ceasing one's own supply has three readings: where the supply has not been promised, has not been embedded, and has not been preceded by sealing off the way, ceasing it does not constitute severing; where it has been promised or embedded, its withdrawal is examined separately by the register it has entered, and embedding can also come through recognition-based loading; first sealing off the way, inducing dependence, and then withdrawing, is severing; the three readings can coexist within one arrangement. Where there has already been an exclusive laying of hands, lifting the closure is ceasing to compress, not granting a right. As to which resources count as the content of basic rights, the normative layer sets only criteria, and the list lies at the rule layer. Force is recognized only where judgment is substituted, and the part that falls on the life-substrate must be carved out. The sole position of supply at the life-substrate holds the accountability of supply, which has two routes, and the institution or government that manages it holds the accountability of creating conditions for supply; accountability binds the position, and the efficacy of exit is not the procedure of exit. Many constraints can together cross the line. Fork Rights is the right to choose; a non-compete agreement takes away a person's choice after leaving and violates Fork Rights, with compensation as without, its gravity depending on how wide a reach it has; it does not fall among local, reversible limits, and this series' suggestion to the rule layer is that, in principle, no opening be made to permit it; a constraint set to protect others, which limits only the step by which he would violate others' ends, is not among them; a conditional payment, when it passes all three criteria, does not take away the choice, and falls within the room the normative layer leaves to the rule layer. That exit is real guards not only the person of the present but also the premise of emergence.
