Performed comprehensive echocardiographic and vascular ultrasonographic examinations to quantify left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT).
Left ventricular mass index was significantly increased in hypertensives with LVH (156 ± 18 g/m²) and HCM (157 ± 31 g/m²) relative to controls (94 ± 14 g/m²) and hypertensives without LVH (98 ± 10 g/m²; p < 0.01).
Carotid IMT was significantly thicker in hypertensives with LVH (0.88 ± 0.04 mm) compared to controls (0.61 ± 0.03 mm), hypertensives without LVH (0.64 ± 0.03 mm), and HCM patients (0.61 ± 0.04 mm; p < 0.01).
LVMI correlated significantly with carotid IMT across all hypertensive patients (r = 0.48, p < 0.01), whereas no significant correlation was observed in the HCM cohort (r = 0.17, p = NS).
