Gynoid fat may associate with lower insulin resistance in observational data; leaves open whether developmental gene programs can be therapeutically targeted.
Cohort (n=3,399)
Intrinsic developmental differences between lower-body and upper-body adipose tissue explain why lower-body fat is associated with lower metabolic and cardiovascular risk.
Pinnick et al. (2014) conducted a cohort in Obesity-related metabolic disease (n=3,399). Lower-body adipose tissue (gynoid fat mass) vs. Upper-body adipose tissue (abdominal fat) was evaluated on Insulin resistance. Lower-body adipose tissue (gynoid fat mass) correlated negatively with insulin resistance, whereas abdominal fat showed the opposite association, driven by intrinsic developmental gene differences.
