Periostin peptide warrants caution in MI models due to fibrosis; leaves open therapeutic potential pending fibrosis mitigation.
Does recombinant periostin peptide improve cardiac function and reduce infarct size in a swine model of myocardial infarction?
p-value: p=<0.05
While periostin peptide improves cardiac function and reduces infarct size post-MI in a large animal model, its clinical translation is hindered by the induction of remote myocardial fibrosis.
Ladage et al. (2013) studied Myocardial Infarction (n=13). Periostin peptide in gelfoam vs. Control gelfoam with buffer was evaluated on Ejection Fraction (EF) at 3 months (p=<0.05). Periostin peptide treatment increased ejection fraction from 31.4% to 40.7% and decreased infarct size by 22% over 12 weeks in a porcine model of myocardial infarction, but increased myocardial fibrosis.
