100% oxygen may enlarge experimental infarcts; leaves open whether it harms or benefits patients with acute MI.
Does 100% oxygen administration reduce infarction size in a dog model of acute myocardial infarction?
High oxygen supply (100%) does not appear to have a favorable effect on experimentally induced acute myocardial infarction in dogs, and may actually increase infarct size.
Malm et al. (1977) studied acute myocardial infarction (n=23). 100% oxygen was evaluated on changes in the infarction size. Administration of 100% oxygen to dogs with experimentally induced acute myocardial infarction increased the infarcted area in 20 of 23 animals, suggesting no favorable effect.
